Shōji Sumi ink and silver ink on Mylar, exterior view, 22 x 10 feet, 2017
Shoji is a site-specific installation recently installed at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth, NH that transforms the loading dock doors and alters their appearance from both inside and outside the gallery.
The title refers to a Japanese shoji—a door, window or room divider consisting of translucent paper over a wood frame. Shoji traditionally use washi paper, however I found frosted Mylar to work perfectly in this situation. The translucent quality of the Mylar allows light to enter the space and provides a changeable visual experience as the light conditions shift from day to evening and from interior and exterior vantage points.
Particles and Waves Installation
The projected video of scattering light moved across multiple layers of scrim that extended across a room lined with black fabric. The large-scale installation could be viewed from multiple vantage points.
